Our son Simon
Our son, Simon, a Sergeant with the Royal Army Medical Corps was injured on 26th October 2009, losing both legs and sustaining other injuries to both hands and right arm. This devastating news filtered very quickly to other family members and friends - in fact, right across the world. But we all held on to the fact that he was alive - had survived - and was declared fit to be flown back to UK and Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham the following day.
Simon's brother, Ross, and both me and my husband, Jon, were assisted by his unit in travelling to Birmingham to be able to see him as soon as we were allowed - as was Simon's wife, visiting family in Kent. It was very reassuring to see him looking like himself - except for the hospital equipment and his obvious injuries. Once Simon regained consciousness, about 5 days after being injured, his recovery (in retrospect) was very quick - and before Christmas Simon was transferred to DMRC Headley Court for on-going rehabilitation.
It has been roller-coaster of emotions watching our son regain his independence - with the loving support of his wife who has been close by his side from Day 1.
Following a course of counselling, for me, provided by the Army, we were introduced to SSAFA and the FISP group. This has been most helpful and useful to both Jon and me - seeing that we are not alone and can talk about any aspect of the situation without having to worry that we will upset anyone - because they know what it's like, have been through the same or similar events and can truly empathise.
